To Bishop Dag Heward-Mills,

Words can’t really describe what you mean to me and to many people. Your belief in and obedience to Jesus Christ has led many to taste and see that the Lord is good. You inspire me to use any and every gift and talent I have for the Lord, because you have done it tirelessly. Your consistency and conviction has inspired me in every facet of my life.

I pray the hand of the Lord will be good upon you, that He will give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, and that He will build a hedge of protection around your family and incredible ministry. 🙂

Now then… As it is Bishop Dag’s birthday, there’s no better time to share some quotes from one his books and of my favourites: Quiet Time. You might be asking, ‘Richard, that’s nice and all… But what the heck is quiet time?’ That brings me to the first quote:

“Quiet time is time you spend with God alone. If anybody were to ask me what the greatest secret of my relationship with God is, I would say without any hesitation that it is the power of the quiet times I have with Him every day.”

Think about this – Bishop Dag has an huge worldwide ministry with many sermons, books written, church buildings built, pastors trained and thousands of souls saved. He has accomplished more than many people have in a lifetime. And yet… He says his greatest secret is quiet time with the Lord. If that doesn’t make you want to have some quiet times… I don’t know what else to tell ya.

The most important time of the day - time with the Lord.

The most important time of the day – time with the Lord.

How do you have a quiet time with God then? Fortunately, here are 7 Steps to having a quiet time from the book:

“Step 1 – Pray to Begin Your Quiet Time
It’s time to give the Lord praise and worship for His goodness.
Step 2 – Read a Passage from the Bible Expecting God to Speak to You
Step 3 – Meditate (Think Through and Soberly Reflect on What You Have Read)
Step 4 – Move into Deeper Bible Study and Make Further References to Things That Strike You during Your Quiet Time
Step 5 – Use Your Bible Reading Guide
You will benefit from anointed teachers whose ministry will help you to grow.
Step 6 – Write Down Whatever the Lord Tells You
Step 7 – Now Spend Time Praying to the Lord.
During the prayer time, God will speak to you through His Spirit.”

That’s how it’s done. Try it – your devotion to God will increase!

One of the best things about Quiet Time is that it is a introduction to apologetics. The definition of apologetics is ‘reasoned arguments or writings in justification of something, typically a theory or religious doctrine.’ To reach some people with Jesus and even for your own level of faith, you will need to know how to defend what you believe with plain facts and information.

In Quiet Time, Bishop Dag’s chapters on The Origin of the Bible and Why The Bible Is Superior to Every Other Book break down how the Bible came into existence, why no other books are added to it, and why we can be confident in it. These chapters will answer a lot of nagging questions about the Bible to a growing believer in Christ. Take this quote as a sample:

“An important truth you must not overlook is that the Church did not create the Canon or the books that we call Scripture. The Church simply recognized the books that were inspired by God and publicly approved of them.”

This is explaining why the books of the Bible are what they are. It is important to know that not every spiritual book was inspired by God. That brings us to the Apocrypha, which Bishop Dag also talks about:

“Divine authority is not claimed by the apocryphal authors; and by others it is virtually disowned.”

Many quotes from the Apocrypha are included in the Bible. Also included reasoning as to why the Apocrypha is not worthy of being scripture, including historical inaccuracy, and the owners openly saying they don’t know why they wrote their books. (Therefore, they’re not divine.) People have tried to confuse me on evangelism before with books in the Apocrypha, but that can never happen now thanks to this book!

“The Bible is superior in the fact that it is the most reliable historic document of all time.
There are more than 5,300 known Greek manuscripts of the New Testament. Add over 10,000 Latin Vulgate and at least 9,300 other early versions (MSS) and we have more than 24,000 manuscripts copies of portions of the New Testament in existence today.”

Many people say that the Bible has been changed over the years and use that to discredit the Word of God. But Bishop Dag points out that still in existence is around 24K of manuscripts from the times of the Bible’s writing. Does that sound like a book you can’t trust?

“You need to write down the things God says to you. I have a book in which I write the things that God shows me. Sometimes I am surprised at the many revelations and instructions that the Lord has given me.”

When you have your quiet time, you must write down the scriptures you have studied and what you have learned. God will speak to you and instruct you for your life. I have had quiet times and needed exactly what I learned in a matter of days, if not the same day.

This book is amazing. I wish I had the time or energy to reproduce the entire book for you… just purchase the book and learn at the feet of one of God’s greatest teachers of this generation. Bring understanding to your life of why the Bible is God’s chosen anthology and the greatest book of all time, worth defending until the end by reading this book.

Oh, and don’t forget to have your quiet time. 😀

3 Life-Changing Quotes from God’s Generals by Roberts Liardon   4 comments

I've been reading this amazing book for 4 years and I can't get enough...

I’ve been reading this amazing book for 4 years and I can’t get enough…

One day I casually said to my pastor, ‘I seem to buy books about people who were drug addicts’. Being the astute man of God he is, his response was ‘you should buy God’s Generals and stop buying these books!’ Being the astute Richard Walker I am, I learned two things: 1) I really like biography books and 2) I’m nuts.

Maybe I’m a nosy parker, but I like reading about people’s lives. My favourite book as a kid was ‘The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 3/4‘ by the late Sue Townsend. Even though it’s a work of fiction, I just liked the feeling that I was inside someone’s head and opinions. I like to know what goes on in the minds of people, and what makes them do what they do. I like to observe strengths and weaknesses of others and try use it in my own life. Even from secular people you can gain a fair amount of godly wisdom – even if it’s just ‘never eeeeever do this’. Biographies excite me to no end!

So you can imagine how I felt when I discovered God’s Generals: Why They Succeeded and Why Some Failed.’ This book by Roberts Liardon is a heavily-researched biography of twelve men of God who lived between the 1800s and 1900s. It includes some of the most famous and controversial ministers of the western world, including Kathryn Kuhlman, Smith Wigglesworth, AA Allen, and Aimee Semple McPherson.

God’s Generals has taught me so much about how to get into ministry and the traps of Satan. This book has introduced me to many men of God – not only those who were profiled, but some mentioned in passing. Of the top of my head, I’ve drawn similarities in my life with Evan Roberts. I’ve been encouraged by the tragedies in the lives of Maria Woodworth-Etter and AA Allen. I’ve taken the note of caution from William Branham. I’ve totally fallen in love with Aimee Semple McPherson. (If her anointing has passed to a lady my age, I’m totally putting a ring on her finger. 😀 )

I am comfortable saying God’s Generals is one of the best and most crucial books I’ve ever read. I want to be a minister for our Lord Jesus, and this book is essential to me for that reason. If you don’t want to work for the Lord, this book may not fascinate you much. But if you are aspiring to be a minister, aside from hearing from God Himself, there’s nothing better you can do than learn from those who went before you.

Enough hype! Here’s what you came for: some quotes from Roberts Liardon’s classic book.

Also, we must love God more than we love anything else. When I was a young boy, I felt impressed to quit playing basketball. But at the time, I knew what God had called me to do, and it seemed I loved basketball more than I loved to pray. So I quit playing basketball. God had set the plan for my life. I agreed to it, and prayer became my life-giving force. It’s fine to enjoy life. Just make sure you don’t love more than God.

Incredible. Just let that one soak in. I once did something similar when I gave up a wrestling career for Jesus, and when I read this I was 100% assured I had done the right thing. John Cena’s a nice guy, but I’d rather be like the original JC: Jesus Christ. 😎

Aimee truly believed that the church had grown too cold and formal, while the world’s love for entertainment brought them encouragement, joy, and laughter. She also felt this to be the reason why so many Christians were hungry for entertainment.

Aimee Semple McPherson and a monkey. I wish I knew exactly how she used it to win to people to the kingdom of God!

Aimee Semple McPherson and a monkey. I wish I knew exactly how she used it to win to people to the kingdom of God!

I love Sister Aimee so much because she I think was bang on the money. Aimee built her church in Los Angeles, CA, in a time that theatre and cinema was growing. She understood that people craved joy and happiness and the coldness of churches could drive people away from Jesus. Her response was to let her creativity show as much as her spirituality. Angelus Temple (her church) was constantly filled with music that she wrote. She preached great sermons and used theatre props to illustrate her messages, almost like a giant production. Her results were tremendous as she regularly filled her five-thousand seater church hall.

What I have learned is to let my creativity, energy, and humour help me to serve God. The Lord wants every part of me, and that includes my personality. That’s why I have The Richie Rich Show, or why I preach on the streets using funny examples – the kingdom of God is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Spirit! We are happy believers! It must show because it is attractive! The joy of the Lord is way more attractive than Keeping Up With The Kardashians or The Simpsons. Let’s show the world!

Every talent and gift you have can be used for God. Dance, media, cooking, speaking, acting, decorating, designing, writing… everything you do God gave to you. Use it for his glory!

[Jack Coe] had the kind of independence that it takes to keep you on the cutting edge. It is when we base our lives and faith on the words of men, or the horrors of our past, that we are defeated. But when we pursue and run after the cry of our hearts, God will meet us every time and manifest his glory.

My lesson from this: when someone you treasure the opinion of tells you something awful about you, you might feel depressed. But when God has put something in your heart, run after it and leave depressing those words in the dust. Jack Coe grew up an orphan, but brought Jesus’ love to many other orphans because he stamped on his past and surged forward. We can be the same… 🙂

What more can I say? Buy God’s Generals: Why They Succeeded and Why Some Failed. From the lessons inside, you can become closer to being a successful minister in the eyes of the Lord.

7 Great Quotes from Joyce Meyer’s Battlefield of the Mind   Leave a comment

Cover of Battlefield of the Mind. Your mind really is a game of chess against Satan…

For a melancholic man like me,  Joyce Meyer’s great book Battlefield of the Mind has truly changed my life and motivated me after a long time of recommendation. I now recommend it to you my brothers and sister in Christ! It has been the ‘Book of the Moment’ on my blog for the last few weeks, and before we move on to another book here’s an assortment of my favourite lines from this incredible piece of literary…

Don’t ever give up, because little by little you are changing.

Don’t let the enemy speak to you and tell you that you are not advancing in your Christian walk! Even a little movement is still movement. Little by little, you and me are changing into God’s image. Don’t stop now. 🙂

You cannot have a positive life and a negative mind.

Let that soak in…

One of your weapons is prayer (asking). You can’t overcome your situation by prayer alone.

You do need to be determined, but determined in the Holy Spirit, not in the effort of your own flesh. The Holy Spirit is your helper – seek His help. Lean on Him.

The Holy Spirit is truly our help to overcome what needs to be overcome in our lives.  Whatever it is, it simply can’t be done without the Spirit of God… Zechariah 4:6

…The Bible teaches us there is no such thing as real peace until we are delivered from the need to compete with others.

How true it is… if we compare our progress to someone else’s, we will always be totally unhappy and ungrateful for what progress God HAS made in us.

What God does for you may not be what he does for someone else.

A simple reality that I say to myself frequently now to avoid comparing myself to others.

It is important for God to arrange our circumstances in such a way that we eventually have to face ourselves.

I thank God for the mountains and valleys in my life now, because now I see that they were allowed to happen so that God could make me ‘meet myself’. Only now I see how much I really need Him in every area of my life, more than anything else on this earth…

There are so many, MANY powerful quotes. For any believer struggling in their mind, struggling with bouts of depression, struggling with self identity or similar things… This is book is a must have for you. Buy one for you and one for your bathroom – you will not be able to put it down!
